We are very excited to announce a brand new app called Dysphagia Therapy to help clinicians navigate their options for managing and rehabilitating swallowing disorders. Dysphagia Therapy, available now for iOS and Android, will quickly become an indispensable tool for speech-language pathologists helping adults overcome disorders of deglutition.
The Dysphagia Therapy app is a collaboration with three expert clinicians and board-certified specialists. Yvette McCoy, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, Tiffani Wallace, MA, CCC-SLP, BSC-S, and Rinki Varindani Desai, MS, CCC-SLP have combined their collective expertise in the assessment and treatment of dysphagia to give you up-to-date information in the palm of your hand.
This handy pocket reference will help you select the best treatments to address the impairments you’ve diagnosed in your dysphagia patients. You’ll have easy access to information about anatomy, cranial nerves, treatment procedures, and patient handouts, making it easier to know what you’re treating and how.
The heart of the app is the Therapy Finder. You simply input the impairments you have skillfully identified in your patients, and the app will find the therapy options that best match. You can then learn more about each option or export the information. Once you’ve decided which options you want to pursue, you can print instructional handouts or customized home programs for your patients.
“I’ve always wanted an app to help me create a home-exercise program for my patients. This Dysphagia Therapy app is that and so much more!! I’m very proud to have worked on such a great app with a great team!” – Tiffani Wallace, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Loaded with Information
The Assessment portion of the app provides details on nine components of the oro-pharyngeal swallow and the treatment options for each one. Click through to the Cranial Nerves listings for a review of the innervation, function, and assessment procedure for six of the cranial nerves most involved in swallowing.
“My vision was to have an app that dysphagia clinicians could use as a guide. In addition we have included cranial nerve assessment which makes the app even more holistic.” – Yvette McCoy, MS CCC-SLP, BCS-S
In the Therapy section, you’ll find instructions, indications, and selected references for over 45 different dysphagia management techniques. You’ll find options for active rehabilitation exercises, swallowing maneuvers, sensory stimulation techniques, compensatory strategies, and treatment protocols.
You’ll find clear anatomical drawings of the cranial nerves and a lateral view of the head and neck that you can use to navigate the app or educate your clients. Each type of therapy is indicated with a distinct icon, so you’ll know at a glance which approach you’re using. You can filter by type to find only the therapy options that are appropriate for your patient.
As you check off the problems you see in your patient, you’ll learn if what you’re seeing is actually an impairment or just an observation caused by an underlying impairment. Filter the Therapy Finder list to highlight the problems you’re able to evaluate by doing either a clinical or an instrumental assessment.
“I was passionate about creating an app that would help dysphagia clinicians around the world feel more competent and confident in their clinical practice. Our Dysphagia Therapy app is all that and more. It is essentially a dysphagia toolbox for SLPs, right in the palm of their hands.” – Rinki Varindani Desai, MS, CCC-SLP
A convenient Search tool, as well as a personal Bookmarks list, make it so quick to find what you’re looking for and come back to your favorites in seconds. All the information can be easily exported via e-mail to share with students, colleagues, or clients.
Useful for Everyone
New clinicians who feel lost in a sea of therapy choices will love knowing they are focusing on the right options. Experienced clinicians will appreciate knowing they have thought of all the possibilities – including newer techniques. Clinicians on-the-go will love being able to print handouts from anywhere. Every clinician will find the pocket guide to clinical nerves and assessment handy. Your patients will love that you’re focusing on the best practices in active swallowing rehab to help them get better, rather than simply downgrading their diet texture.
“This Dysphagia Therapy app is going to be so useful for the SLP in any setting who works with dysphagic patients. It is well-organized and easy to find what you are after. I appreciate the cranial nerve section and have used it in acute care to confirm my assessment and make sure I was not missing something. In the Therapy Finder, the exercises, compensatory strategies, and maneuvers are all research-based and include clear instructions for both the SLP and the patient.” – Brenda M. Arend, MA, CCC-SLP
NOTE: The Dysphagia Therapy app is intended for use by trained dysphagia clinicians and students only. It is NOT a tool for people with swallowing disorders to self-diagnose or set their own therapy program. Please ensure you are a healthcare professional (speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, dietician, etc.) licensed to provide dysphagia assessment and treatment before downloading or using this app.
